JOHN DOYLE
Director
John studied theatre at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and then on a scholarship as Junior Artist in Residence at the University of Georgia, USA. He has been Artistic Director of four theatres: the Swan Theatre in Worcester, the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham, the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool and the Theatre Royal in York. For the past ten years he has been working as a freelance director.
He has been part of the development of an actor-musicianship in this country with many of his shows originating from the Watermill Theatre. His most recent show with them, Sweeney Todd, (which he has also designed) has been playing to full houses on Broadway, enjoyed an extended run in the West End, has just been out on a UK tour and was nominated for the Olivier Award for Outstanding Musical Production and for the Evening Standard Best Musical Award as well as winning the Whatsonstage Theatregoers Award for Best Musical Revival. He has also just directed Sondheim’s Company for Cincinnati Playhouse, USA which will be moving to Broadway in the Autumn and will direct Mahagonny for Los Angeles Opera and Lucia di Lammermoor for Scottish Opera in 2007.
